Right is a copy of part of the cover of a parchment document detailing
the sale of land to James Mayer on which his home at 310 New Street Biddulph
Moor was built.
The cost of the land was £26 14s 6d. |

Jacob Mayer born 3rd October 1865 (pictured below right) married Lydia
Nixon (below left) on 26th March 1894 at St Peters Church in Congleton. |

James and Mary Mayer had a large
family.
Elizabeth in 1851 then, Ralph,
Harriet, Mary Maria, James, Charlotte, Isaac, Jacob, Hannah, Sarah Ann,
Frances and finally Peter in 1875.
James was a collier and also a lay preacher on the local
Methodist circuit.

On the left we see a young Ernest Mayer who was born on 11th
November 1896 in Hot Lane, Biddulph Moor. He is pictured with his
grandmother Sarah Ann Mayer (nee Mellor).
Ernest Mayer is the great grandson of Issac Mayer and Mary
Shufflebotham. They had four children, James, Betty, Ralph and Martha.
The eldest son James was born on 3rd October 1828 and
baptised at the Primitive Methodist Church in Tunstall.
The Burial register for Biddulph Parish Church entry 1071
records Isaac Mayers Beesom maker & Pot seller of The Mill Hole nr the Hurst
died 30 or 31 Jul 1838 buried 2 Aug 1838 age 44 years. Notes Found dead in
bed. Isaac Mayer died on 30 July 1838.

On the left is a copy of the Biddulph Chronicle report of the wedding of
Miss Betty Mayer to Mr Frank Plant on August 11th 1956. Kathleen Mayer is
age 3. |

Ernest joined the Royal Navy aged 19 on 31 May 1916. He is
described as having auburn hair blue eyes with a fresh complexion.
His first posting was on the Victory, then the Kildonan
Castle and finally back to the Victory.
From his copy of Course of Ammunition for Boys he notes the
places he visited while in the navy.
These include Iceland, Russia, Sierra Leone, New York,
Sydney, Quebec and New Jersey.
He was demobilised on 11 February 1919.

The Kildonan Castle

James Mayer married Mary Walley on 24 September 1849 at St
Lawrence Church Biddulph.
James is age 20 a collier son of Isaac Mayor Labourer. Mary
is 19 a domestic servant daughter of James Walley collier. Witnesses were
Isaac Shufflebottom and Ruth Hulme.
James and Mary had a family of 12 children. |

Ernest married Elizabeth Doorbar in 1921 at St Lawrence Church Biddulph.
They had 2 children - William and Betty. |
