THE BROWNS OF BIDDULPH AND BIDDULPH MOOR

SOLOMON BROWN AND SARAH BROUGH

Solomon was the son of Daniel and Ellen Brown.  He was baptised at St Lawrence, Biddulph, Staffordshire on August 9th 1767.  He was the eldest of four children.  Sarah was baptised on June 17th 1757 and Mary and Daniel were baptised on April 27th 1865.  It is not known if they were twins or just baptised at the same time.

Solomon became a shoemaker and he married Sarah BROUGH, the daughter of Charles and Sarah Brough, on January 28th 1799. The marriage took place at St Lawrence, Biddulph and the Revd. Jonathan Wilson performed the ceremony

Solomon and Sarah had seven children:

Sarah BROWN               bp. June 2nd 1799

Daniel BROWN               bp. September 6th 1801

Charles BROWN            bp. February 19th 1804

Hannah BROWN             bp. April 13th 1806

Solomon BROWN          bp. April 16th 1809

Ellen BROWN                 bp. October 27th 1811

Martha BROWN              bp. November 3rd 1816

Solomon and Sarah were living at Biddulph Moor when the 1841 census was taken.  Solomon was a shoemaker and gave his age as 75 and Sarah was 60.

Due to the ‘rounding down’ of ages when this census was taken Solomon could have been between 75 and 79 and Sarah could have been between 60 and 64.

(HO107/986/15/34/28)

Solomon died on August 12th 1848.  He lived at Greenway Moor and the cause of death was ‘natural decay’.  He was 81 years old and had been a journeyman shoemaker.  Sarah died nine years later, on July 2nd 1857, aged 81, the cause of death being ‘old age’.  A Sarah Brown registered the death.  No relationship was indicated, but she was present at the death.
