The first Yates is Benjamin who was born in 1805, he was an Ostler
or Stablekeeper at Inn. He is not shown on any census, the Bishops
transcripts for Bosley show his occupation as Horsekeeper
He married at Prestbury Parish Church on 16 Sep 1827 - "Benjamin Yates
servant Mary Bennett sp both of Bosley." We have a lot more detail about the
"Bennett" family of Bosley.
The 1841 census indicates that Mary was born in Bosley, and is widowed
with 2 children. In the 1851 census Mary is living with Joseph Smith (wife of). Her
third child (Joseph) was born out of wedlock. On Joseph's birth certificate
there is no father and Mary only gives the name Yates she does not state a
maiden name. On the 1851 census Mary is shown as the wife of Joseph Smith,
and the child Joseph is now called Smith (not Yates).
In 1861 Mary is called Smith aged 56 born Bosley living with Joseph Smith
aged 55 an Agricutural Labourer at the Old Bull.
Mary died on 27 May 1868 her name given as Mary Yates, it must be assumed
that she never married Joseph Smith. She died in Bosley age given as 65,
occupation given as "Widow of Benjamin Yates Farm Labourer". Cause of death
"Gastritis some years Certified." It was registered on the 13th May 1868 by
the mark of Samuel Darcey in attendance at Bosley. Samuel Darcey was living
at the Harrington Arms Bosley as a 61 year old Lodger occupation Labourer in
1861, place of birth Sproston Cheshire. In 1871 Darcey seems to be in a
separate house at the Harrington Arms a 71 year old labourer with place of
birth now given as Denton Lancashire.
Benjamin's son Abel moved to Buglawton/Congleton where he became a Carter
and small Farmer.
James Yates the then Landlord of the "Lord Nelson Inn" is seen in the
charabanc photograph sitting at the front on the right hand side:

Below is a copy
of Kelly's 1891 Cheshire Directory. Abel Yates of Bath Vale is the last
entry on the page.
