The details below are transcribed from original census records. Spellings are as interpreted from the enumerators writing. It was decided to display the information in name order so the progress of each individual can be seen. This does lead to problems, notable the entries are not in order of family as there are in normal census returns. However, they are usually in family order when practical i.e. for the top five names - John was married to Hannah and their children are Sarah, Elizabeth and Charles. To determine where they fit in the family tree take this link to the family tree. The tree is big so you will have to click on the magnifying glass symbol to enlarge and scroll to see whichever part of the tree you are interested in. If the file above does not open they you may need the (free) download of Adobe® Reader® 7.0 Occupations: Many of the Occupations listed below are self explanatory, however, here are some details - Silk Piecer - Joined the broken threads in the silk spinning mills, usually done by small children or women Cotton Piecer - Joined the broken threads in the cotton spinning mills, usually done by small children or women (Wood) Sawyer - Timber mill/pit worker, sawing timber (probably cutting boards in this instance)_ Fustian Cutter - A person who lifted and cut the threads in the making of Fustian, formerly a kind of coarse cloth made of cotton and flax. Now a thick, twilled cotton cloth with a short pile or nap, a kind of cotton velvet. A long thin knife was inserted into the loops and the threads cut as it was pulled through, stretched between rollers. The cloth was then brushed to raise the pile. Fustian is the old name for corduroy. Bobbin Reeler - operated the machine that wound the yarn (in this case cotton) onto the bobbin Cotton (or Silk) Dresser - Operator who assembled the yarns or threads prior to weaving of cloth Silk Winder - Wound the silk from the silkworm cocoons onto bobbins Silk Worker (Mill Man Silk) - Person engaged in the manufacture and or sale of silk Silk Doubler - prepares silk tread or yarn by spinning, doubling or twisting Railway Plate Layer - Laid and maintained railway tracks. The name predates railways, and is derived from the original "plateways" which existed hundreds of years ago, laid for coal mines. Porter - Carried baggage in railway stations (in this case) could also be a door or gate keeper
